Location

The village of Frymburk is located about one and a half hours south of Prague and about one hour north of Germany and Austria (do not mistake it for the other Frymburk on Lipno lake on the Austrian border). The nearest little town, where the new pool is, is Horaždovice, about 9 km distant. Strakonice to the east and Sušice to the west are both about 16 kilometres away and have many shops (good for crystal and leather) and supermarkets (very reasonably priced good quality champagne and beer). Beyond our orchard the little wooded hills rise gradually into bigger wooded ridges running south to the border. By the time they reach this they are around five thousand feet high and the forest is broken only by rivers lakes and alpine style meadows. The area is renowned for its primeval forest and its many castles and old mansion houses.

You can find a map of the new EU members for example at
http://www.eurunion.org/legislat/agd2000/Accession2004Map.jpg
and locate the Czech republic (Česká Republika). Detailed maps of the Czech republic can be found at
http://mapy.cz/
Enter Frymburk 34 201 (post code) & reduce the size of the map projected. When you choose zoom level 4 you will see our village Frymburk in the middle of this map. Continue choosing lower magnification and you receive more details about the location related to bigger cities like Prague (Praha). The village of Frymburk is located about one and a half hours south of Prague and about one hour north of Germany and Austria (don’t be mistaken for the other Frymburk on Lipno lake on the Austrian border).

By car

From the ferry ports pick up the nearest motorway for Köln, Germany , then turn south to Frankfurt, then east to Wuzburg and Nurnburg and continue east to Amberg where the motorway runs out. On smaller (but still very good) German roads continue to Cham and then the German/Czech border. From the German border i.e Furth im Wald/Folmava find the road from Klatovy to Horaždovice. After Klatovy and just before reaching Horaždovice (after the villages Hradešice and Malý Bor) take the road No.169 to Sušice and Rabí. Immediately after Rabi turn left to Žichovice (2km). At Žichovice turn left to Frymburk (6km). You will go through the village of Nezamyslice where you find no signs for Frymburk although it’s only 3 ks. When you think you might be lost, follow the sign to Strakonice and just around to the left you will enter Frymburk village. Go through the village passing the two village ponds and fortified farm house. After a sharp bend to the left and the sight of hostinec (=pub), turn right where you will find a big brown gate with No. 4 on it.
Note:
Please note that Frymburk was named Želenov on older maps (after a hill of the same name). Also, there is another Frymburk village near Lipno lake.

Easy Jet does cheap flights to Prague airport from many British cities. All international car hire companies operate at the Prague airport but you could try a Czech one for comparison http://www.dvorak-rentacar.cz/ or others with Skoda cars

The farmhouse is located one and a half hours south of Prague (Praha) and is easily reached from the main Prague airport, Ruzyne. From the airport first follow the general sign ‘Ostatni Transit’. As soon as they appear follow signs for Strakonice (approximately 110 kilometres south of Prague). When arriving at Strakonice start following signs for Horaždovice. After going 6 kilometres in that direction, in the village of Katovice, turn left following the sign to Volenice (about 8 kms). Several small villages will pass before reaching Volenice. At the top of the village square or T. junction turn right. At this moment there are no signs for Frymburk but follow signs for Sušice. At the fork outside Volenice keep left on the road to Susice (road no.172). About two kilometres later the actual village of Frymburk will appear. After a first sharp bend to the right, the first house on the left is ours with a large brown gate. Cars can be parked in the courtyard once the gate is opened.
To return to the airport leave the main road to Praha and when quite close you look for signs to Karlovy Vary/Chomutov. When these split follow Chomutov until airport signs appear (letistě) and eventually airport. The international signs will take you to departure building.

Easy Jet, Czech arlines etc do flights to Prague or Praha from many British cities. Edinburgh to Prague, by czech airlines, can be direct. From Praha airport ask the taxi driver to take you to Smíchovské nádraží (Na Knížecí) and help you to find a bus to Strakonice & ask for express if possible. The taxi fares should be agreed before starting, or use a reputable company like AAA (tel 14 0 14 or 33 11 33 11) - they speak English - and ask when the cab will come and what the booking number is. Airport to centrum should not be much more than 700 to 1000 czk. Bus for the next 110 kms should be about 100czk!
Alternatively use the underground and get off at the metro station Anděl and go forward in the direction of the trains to come out at the right bus station and the platform 16 usually has the buses to Strakonice.
